Swedish design invades the London Design Festival, through exhibitions, seminars and events. Swedish Design Goes London brings an exciting mix of young talents as well as new designs from established brands, thus sharing the vital diversity, which is the hallmark of Swedish Design today, moving beyond the deeply rooted perception of simple stylistic consistency.
At Hemma: Swedish Design Goes London at the Residence, visitors will have the rare opportunity to visit the 18th century Robert and James Adam designed house, home to the Swedish Ambassador Nicola Clase, who is generously opening her doors for this occasion. “Hemma” means “at home” in Swedish. The exhibition includes over fifty designers and companies, and reflects the values of Swedish lifestyle in a playful blend of products, food, music and fashion. Each room has its own theme.
The dining room will have on display individually created table settings by various companies. They include: classical company Svenskt Tenn; internationally acclaimed designer Monica Förster showing her new cutlery by Gense; Whatswhat, three young designers who have just graduated from Konstfack; ceramic producer Mateus, and finally by Orrefors presenting its new Karl Lagerfeld collection. In the salons, established designers such as Anna Kraitz, Thomas Bernstrand and Folkform are sharing space with younger talents: Simon Klenell, Ulrika Hägglöf and Sara Reinholtz, to mention a few. A wide range of cupboards in various shapes by A 2 designers, Olby, Ragnars and Zweed are surrounded by newly designed chairs, tables, lamps and other interiors objects.
Swedish Design Goes London is also about creating meetings between people. British designers with their own relationship to Sweden will take part of the event, such Ross Lovegrove and Ilse Crawford. Library Talks will shed light upon the trends within Swedish and British design and architecture. Seated in comfortable sofas, covered by 10 Swedish Designers’ fabric, the panelists will discuss current topics, while the audience can choose from the various seats spread out in the Library. Key British speakers like Daniel Charny, Hugo Macdonald, Kieran Long, Sebastian Wrong and Sue Timney will meet with Swedish colleagues Hanna Nova Beatrice, Tom Hedqvist, Thomas Sandell and many more. Konstfack discusses shifts within design with Royal College of Arts.
During the weekends, visitors will have chance to meet individual designers and companies at scheduled Fika breaks. Fika is a unique noun in Swedish, referring to an informal gathering of friends for coffee and a chat – normally accompanied by cakes and cookies.
The Swedish Government is represented by the Swedish Minister of Trade, Ms Ewa Björling, who will participate in an event aimed at creating business contacts between Swedish and British companies, architects and buyers.
At Designersblock, the exhibition ung8 – young Swedish design will be inaugurated on September 21 by HRH Prince Carl Philip of Sweden. ung8 is a juried selection of new young talents and the single largest exhibition at Designersblock this year. ung 8 is an engaging collective demonstration of up-and-coming designers, and Designersblock is the perfect platform to do so.
The Skandium store in Knightsbridge plays host to a retrospective of one of Sweden’s most celebrated and influential design trio, Claesson Koivisto Rune.
Swedish Design Goes London is produced by Svensk Form and the Swedish Trade Council in collaboration with the Swedish institute and the Embassy of Sweden in London. Further support was given by Visit Sweden, the Swedish Art Council, Konstfack and SEB together with products from several private sponsors.
